Operational Water Supply Forecasting for Western US Rivers
Description
Improved predictions of seasonal water supply forecasts to support irrigated agriculture planning.
Detailed example
The model outputs water supply forecasts.
AI / analytics pattern
Classical/Predictive Machine Learning: Models trained on data to make predictions or classifications based on identified patterns or relationships.
Automation level / stage
c) Deployed – The use case is being actively authorized or utilized to support the functions or mission of an agency.
Expected benefit
The National Water and Climate Center has a multi-model machine-learning metasystem (M4) for generating water supply forecasts. This model uses AI and other data-science technologies to reduce forecast errors, helping stakeholders make better decisions about water supply availability.
Controls / human review
ATO: No; PIA: Not published
Data needed
The data contains snow and precipitation metrics from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecast program Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) monitoring network.
