Integrate Word Processor AI for Digitalization
Description
The intended purpose of the Digitalization Enablement Platform (DEP) and the integration of AI into processing taxpayer submitted documents is to minimize the transcription and storage of paper documents, streamline case management, and enhance the accuracy and efficiency with which taxpayer information is extracted, organized, and made accessible. The expected benefits include a massive reduction in physical storage requirements, cost savings, improved data security, a reduction in backlogged cases, and improved service.
Detailed example
The AI will extract taxpayer information from IRS forms agnostic of any demographic bias, in accordance with federal AI use regulations and standards.
AI / analytics pattern
Classical/Predictive Machine Learning: Models trained on data to make predictions or classifications based on identified patterns or relationships.
Automation level / stage
c) Deployed – The use case is being actively authorized or utilized to support the functions or mission of an agency.
Expected benefit
Use of this system automates what formally required IRS staff to transcribe data form taxpayer submitted forms. This OCR automation, allows for the faster processing of taxpayer submissions and for efficiencies of IRS staff time.
Audit / financial statement impact
The output is not presumed to be high-impact and is not used as the principal basis for significant decisions/actions
Controls / human review
ATO: Yes; PIA: Not published
Data needed
The project team created a Synthetic Data Generator (SDG) to generate sample IRS completed forms in order to train the AI models. Approximately 50 to 100 synthetically generated form are used to both train and test the AI models.
